Gujarat Titan’s Key For IPL 2025

Buttler has had a significant impact on T20 cricket, and Gill, who will be leading GT this season, is adamant that such an experience can be a game-changer. “If you’ve got a player like Jos Buttler, you wouldn’t necessarily see it as a problem. He has played in different positions in the past and for England and the IPL over the years,” Gill said before their season opener against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on March 25.

GT is still to work out Buttler’s exact batting position, but Gill is confident his flexibility will work in the team’s favour. For the last eight to nine years, Buttler has come up with impactful performances irrespective of where he bats in the batting order, and he makes GT’s lineup ominous.

Buttler on Rajasthan Royals Stint: ‘A New Beginning for Me’

Having featured for RR for seven fruitful seasons, Buttler now takes on a new role at GT. He also enjoyed great success in IPL 2022, where he scored 863 runs as an opener for RR. But, his form in the last two seasons has been woeful, with runs less than 400. But now, with IPL 2025 as a new chapter in his career, Buttler is keen to hit the reset button and get back to his best.

His transfer to GT comes at a pivotal moment in his career. Buttler resigned from England’s white-ball captaincy following the side’s early exit from this year’s Champions Trophy. Now,  after a shot at redemption, he is set to play a big role in GT’s hunt for yet another IPL title.

New Squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2025 After Overhaul

After a triumphant maiden year in 2022, where they won the IPL title, GT reached the IPL final in 2023 but eventually finished 8th following IPL 2024 and have shaken up their squad. The team had undergone a complete overhaul in the IPL 2025 mega auction and bolstered their pace attack with big acquisitions like Mohammed Siraj (INR 12.25 crore), Kagiso Rabada (INR 10.75 crore) and Prasidh Krishna (INR 9.5 crore). They will be supported by a deep, fast-bowling group  with Gerald Coetzee, Ishant Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Kulwant Khejroliya, and Arshad Khan.

On the batting front, GT seems to have the golden young pair of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler opening the innings. If Buttler gets into a rhythm early, this could be one of the most explosive pairings in the tournament.

GT’s Weaknesses and Strengths for the Season

GT have a good top three, Gill, Buttler and Sai Sudharsan, but the middle-order still remains relatively untested in IPL. The likes of Sherfane Rutherford, Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar and Shahrukh Khan need to step up if GT need to avoid becoming too dependent on their top order. Moreover, GT will also be relying on the world-class bowlers Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada as they lead the bowling department in making crucial breakthroughs.

Key Players to Watch

  • Jos Buttler at Narendra Modi Stadium — Buttler has a decent record at his new home ground in Ahmedabad with 317 runs in eight T20s, which includes a three-figure mark against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2022.
  • Shubman Gill’s IPL 2025 Mission – Gill was the only player of the Tournament in 2024 who did not win the T20 World Cup with India.
  • The Bowling Pair of Rabada and Rashid Khan: Both bowlers were crucial for MI Cape Town in the SA20 as they won the title and will be able to replicate a similar performance for GT.

Fully Available Squad Up for the Challenge

GT will head to IPL 2025 with its full, fit squad ready. Their leading run-getter from last season, Sai Sudharsan, has returned from sports hernia surgery, and Shahrukh Khan is available after missing important domestic matches due to injury.

Having overhauled the squad and a fresh leadership in Gill and Buttler’s firepower, GT will be eyeing a bounce-back season after the disappointment of the last and taking their place as one of the league’s top teams.
